What is Week 17 Legend?

Week 17 Legend is a blog that's mostly about sports but may dive into other topics occasionally.

So what?  There are a lot of sports blogs.  Why should I read this one?

Week 17 Legend revolves around two basic ideas:
  1. Attempting to find unique solutions to different issues in sports.
  2. Looking at sports using ideas of probability and randomness.  Basically, W17L assumes that just because something happened, it doesn't mean that it will happen again or even that it should have happened that time.  Sports are very random.  I hope some of that made sense.  I'll try to make things easy to understand in my posts.

So it sounds like there will be a lot of math in this blog, right?

I'll try to focus on the concepts more than actual numbers.  I like math and I even get bored/confused reading math-based sports articles.

How did Week 17 Legend get its name?

The name Week 17 Legend is a tribute to linebacker Erik Walden.  For those who don't know why, in Week 17 of the 2010 season, the Packers played the Bears and needed to win the game to make the playoffs.  The game was tied at zero with 5 minutes left in the second quarter, and the Bears had 3rd and goal at the 4-yard line.  Cutler drops back...and gets sacked!  Was it Matthews, Hawk, Raji?  Nope, some guy named Walden.  As Walden kept making big plays, we became more and more stunned because no one had any idea who this Walden guy was.  He ended up with 11 tackles and 3 sacks.  It got to the point where I was telling Green Bay to give the ball to Walden because no one else was doing anything with it.  It was one of my favorite NFL moments ever.  There's nothing like an unknown player stepping up in the last week to get his team to the playoffs.
